about

Anamnesis (2005/2020) which literally means a recalling to memory, or recollection, was realized using raw materials from the Yamaha TX-516 tone generator, subjected to digital processing, and was originally composed for four-channel mono. It uses both traditional and current methods of realization to bridge the past and the present. Compositionally, the work began as a single gesture, which was dismantled and separated to form three. These three gestures are structural points in the six-minute work. Since these three gestures were once one, they provide unity and balance that is also a sort of anamnesis.

The original version of this work was completed in 2005. I revisited this work this year, in 2020, to further explore the separation of the initial gesture, and the addition of new layers of material, to symbolize the layers of memories that form over time. I have fond memories of working on this piece as a graduate student years ago, and I enjoyed rekindling those memories as I reworked this piece today. This work was originally composed and engineered in the University of Illinois Experimental Music Studios (2005), and has been updated and re-engineered for 8-channel audio in the EIU Electronic Music Studios (2020).
